SELECTED PRESS QUOTES
ALBUM INFO: Golden Bear is back with “Alive”, their first LP since 2007’s critically-acclaimed “To the Farthest Star”. In the time since their last album, babies were born, members were gained, members were lost, members were married, etc., etc...It’s been a while.
The band began recording in January of 2009 with the goal of making their heaviest album yet. Simply cranking up the guitars seemed like the obvious way to go, so the band focused instead on capturing the sound they were hearing in their heads in a more inventive and unpredictable way. Vibraphone and piano were pushed to the forefront and treated like electric guitars, complete with fuzzed-out distortion and spaced-out effects. This, along with Golden Bear’s usual booming drums and some woolly guitar work (after all, it wouldn’t be GB without it), yielded the results the guys were aiming for. “Alive” provides a healthy dose of pop and heavy progressive rock suitable for blasting out of speakers of all shapes and sizes.
